Samsung and SK hynix 10-Day Crunch Hits Phone Buyers
Samsung and SK hynix memory inventories fell below 10 days as AI wafers crowd out phones, lifting handset prices 15% and DDR5 dies 480% year over year.
Samsung Electronics and SK hynix held less than 10 days of memory inventory in the third quarter, KB Securities said on September 7. That buffer disappears if a fab stumbles. Large cloud groups are booking HBM, server DDR5 and enterprise SSDs first, so phone and PC makers wait on what is left.
The wafers that used to feed handsets now go into stacks for AI accelerators. HBM4 needs about three times the wafer capacity of ordinary DRAM, and KB Securities already sees 2027 bit demand for DRAM and NAND running more than 10 percentage points ahead of supply.
A 10-Day Buffer at the Two Biggest Memory Makers
The September 7 note from KB Securities, a Seoul brokerage, put finished memory stock at Samsung and SK hynix below 10 days as of the third quarter. Kim Dong-won, the firm’s head of research, said the figure is past a normal restock. Sellable product itself could run out in 2027 if demand keeps clearing every extra bit.
Behind that warning is a revised spend number. KB now puts AI infrastructure spending by the large cloud companies at $1.3 trillion next year, up 60% from the year before. Memory’s slice of that bill is estimated at 57%, up from 14% the prior year. TrendForce, the memory tracker, has put the same share as high as 68%.
THE KB SECURITIES SNAPSHOT
- Finished stock: Samsung and SK hynix memory inventories had fallen to less than 10 days in the third quarter.
- Cloud spend: Hyperscaler AI infrastructure investment for 2027 is revised to $1.3 trillion, a 60% increase.
- Memory’s share: KB estimates memory will take 57% of that spend, up from 14% the year before.
- 2027 gap: Bit demand for DRAM and NAND is seen exceeding supply by more than 10 percentage points.
AI servers will not stop at HBM. Kim said they will also pull in server DDR5 and enterprise SSDs, which is why a short DRAM shelf now shows up in phones, PCs and storage at the same time.
Three DRAM Wafers for Every HBM4 Stack
HBM is DRAM stacked on a base die and wired through the silicon. The same production lines that print flat DDR5 and LPDDR can be pointed at those stacks instead, and that is what both Korean suppliers are doing as they chase higher-value AI parts.
KB Securities says HBM4 needs roughly three times the wafer capacity of general-purpose DRAM. With wafer starts limited, a full HBM4 ramp cuts the pool left for ordinary DRAM. Samsung began HBM4 mass production in February 2026. SK hynix followed in June, ahead of an original September plan.
Industry estimates in a September 4 TrendForce note put HBM output at Samsung and SK hynix at about 150,000 to 200,000 wafers a month each. Samsung is directing about half of that HBM output to HBM4. Micron is lifting HBM output toward 100,000 wafers a month by year-end, still well behind the two Korean lines.
HBM also needs a logic base die, which pulls advanced foundry wafers into the same fight. The squeeze is no longer confined to DRAM cleanrooms. Phone DRAM, PC DRAM and some foundry customers are now in one queue.
Smartphone Prices Climbed 15% as Memory Costs Jumped
That queue already has a retail price. Counterpoint Research said on September 3 that existing smartphone prices have risen 15% on average so far in 2026, with some models nearly doubling. New launches were 25% costlier than year-ago variants. More than 40% of models saw list-price hikes, which Counterpoint called a first for the industry.
Research director Tarun Pathak said memory has become a key driver of smartphone bill-of-materials costs, leaving brands little room to swallow the increase. The hit is hardest where most phones still sell on price. India was up 21%, Asia Pacific 19% and the Middle East and Africa 18%.
EXISTING SMARTPHONE PRICE RISES IN 2026
| Market | Average rise |
|---|---|
| India | 21% |
| Asia Pacific | 19% |
| Middle East and Africa | 18% |
| Latin America | 16% |
| China | 10% |
| Europe | 7% |
| United States | 5% |
China, Europe and the United States saw smaller lifts, and those lifts sat mostly in new launches rather than on phones already on shelves. Apple has held iPhone prices steady even though Counterpoint said memory prices have risen fourfold since the fourth quarter of 2025. Senior analyst Karn Chauhan said new phones, including the iPhone 18 series, are still expected to cost more in the coming quarters.
PC buyers are on the same die. MemoryIndex, which tracks DRAMeXchange spot prints, put the DDR5 16Gb (2Gx8) DDR5 16Gb die at $53.36 on September 10, up 3.89% over 30 days and 480% year over year. A tracked 32GB DDR5 kit sat at $455.45, up 230% year over year.
Who Gets Memory When the Shelf Is Empty?
The split is contractual. Cloud groups have been locking HBM and server DRAM on multi-year deals. Phone and PC brands still largely buy on quarterly contracts, so they meet the shortage as a price and a missing SKU rather than as a reserved wafer start.
Beyond a simple recovery in demand, a situation could arise in which the volume available for sale itself is depleted. AI servers will absorb demand for not only HBM but also server DDR5 and enterprise SSDs, potentially leading to a historic shortage.
Kim Dong-won, Head of Research, KB Securities
TrendForce still expects conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 13% to 18% in the third quarter. That is a smaller step than the second quarter, and it is not extra supply. PC and smartphone buyers have started refusing quotes and cutting configurations because the last round of increases already reset what they can pay.
Traders read an empty warehouse as pricing power. The people who actually need a 12GB phone or a 32GB laptop read it as a higher checkout total, or as a spec that quietly shrank. Those two readings of the same 10-day number are the whole market now.
$154.73 Billion in One DRAM Quarter
The suppliers are not short of revenue. TrendForce said on September 7 that DRAM industry revenue of $154.73 billion in the second quarter was up 59.5% from the first. Extra output went mainly to servers. Bit shipments grew only modestly. Consumer DRAM is expected to see the strongest further price growth because suppliers have cut that mix on purpose.
Q2 2026 DRAM REVENUE
| Supplier | Revenue | QoQ | Share | Prior share |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Electronics | $60.98 billion | +63.4% | 39.4% | 38.5% |
| SK hynix | $38.59 billion | +37.9% | 24.9% | 28.8% |
| Micron Technology | $36.0 billion | +65.5% | 23.3% | 22.4% |
Samsung and SK hynix together held 64.3% of DRAM revenue. Samsung posted the strongest bit-shipment growth among the three, helped by the early HBM4 ramp. SK hynix still ships the highest HBM mix of the group, which capped how fast its average selling price could move even as spot rates jumped. Micron, which leaned into higher-priced server DRAM, closed to 1.6 points of second place.
Smaller DRAM houses that still run older nodes have been taking orders the big three no longer fully fill. That is leftover demand, not a second source for HBM4.
Pyeongtaek and Cheongju Cannot Refill 2027
The physical answer to a 10-day shelf is more wafers, and those wafers are years away from changing 2027. Samsung is concentrating the HBM ramp on its Pyeongtaek P4 line. SK hynix started wafers at the M15X extension in Cheongju in the first quarter of 2026, with a packaging hall still being pulled forward.
TrendForce’s working view for 2026 and 2027 is that the three big suppliers will raise bits mainly by moving to newer process nodes, not by adding a lot of raw wafer starts. That keeps bit growth modest even while capital spending rises.
THE MEMORY TIGHTENING CALENDAR
- February 2026: Samsung Electronics begins HBM4 mass production.
- June 2026: SK hynix begins HBM4 mass production, earlier than its original September plan.
- August 27, 2026: SK hynix chief executive Kwak Noh-jung says at the Indiana plant groundbreaking that the memory crunch could persist until 2030.
- September 3, 2026: Counterpoint records a 15% rise in existing smartphone prices as brands pass on memory costs.
- September 7, 2026: KB Securities puts Samsung and SK hynix memory inventories at less than 10 days, and TrendForce prints second-quarter DRAM revenue of $154.73 billion.
SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won said at Computex 2026 that SK hynix will double wafer capacity over five years and that the shortage could last through 2030. A five-year build does not restock 2027. It is a bet that this allocation, cloud first, everyone else later, is the new baseline.
Lower Storage, Fewer Cameras, More 4G Phones
Brands that cannot reserve HBM-style supply are changing the product instead of winning the auction. Counterpoint’s model-level tracker, covering more than 4,000 active phones, shows the same menu across price-sensitive markets.
HOW PHONE BRANDS ARE ABSORBING THE MEMORY BILL
- Storage cuts: Lower-capacity variants replace the SKUs that used to sit at the default price.
- Thinner cameras: Reduced camera setups shave cost where memory already dominates the bill of materials.
- Older radios: Some bands see more 4G models brought back so the chassis can still hit a price point.
- Checkout props: Carriers and retailers push financing, trade-ins and installment plans so the higher sticker does not kill the sale on day one.
- Slower upgrades: Buyers delay, pick the smaller-storage option, or move to refurbished units.
Chauhan said brands will keep steering volume toward higher-end models to protect margins, and will keep using storage and mix changes to limit list-price jumps where shoppers will not pay. That is the hidden ledger under the 10-day number. Samsung and SK hynix are not out of memory. They are out of unallocated memory, and the gap is being closed in the spec sheet of the next mid-range phone.
Kwak’s 2030 horizon is the timeline that now sits on those spec sheets. Until new Korean and U.S. rooms add bits that are not already promised to AI servers, the people who buy phones and PCs remain the residual buyers of a market that no longer treats them as the core load.
